Mona Lisa Africa
Senegal
A few decades ago, Senegal was the showcase of Francophone Africa. Within a few years though the social situation has degraded to the point that, in July 2000, it ranked with the group of least developed countries (156th position in a total of 177 countries). More than 65% of the people live below the poverty line.
However, while Senegal has a long way to go towards improving, it is the first Francophone country in West Africa to adopt a Declaration on Population Policy (1988) of which the main objectives are: reducing mortality and morbidity particularly that of mothers and children, and balancing the pace of population growth with the requirements for development.
Senegal is part of the "Mona Lisa Africa" pilot program which started in September 2006.
