At the beginning of October 2006, the UNFPA team led by Marlène Lays, organised a training session on the placement and removal of implants and IUDs in Senegal. This took place at the Research and Training Center for Reproductive Health. As well, a group of a dozen health services (doctors, midwives.) participated so that they could be trained by Professor Agrégé Allasane Diouf.

Upon their return to Niger, the group of trained doctors and midwifes received IUDs from the Nigerian Ministry of Health, thus allowing them to directly put into practice the placement of Intra Uterine Devices.

Professor Diouf (CEFOREP trainer) who is also in charge of monitoring the “on-the-ground” training of the group of trained health professionals went to Niger at the beginning of November 2006 and visited the 7 sites where the group practise:

  • The National Centre of Reproductive Health at Niamey
  • SOMAI Hospital at Arlit
  • Le district Sanitaire at Arlit
  • The Central Maternity Hospital at Zinder
  • Maradi Regional Maternity Centre
  • A Unicef Satellite (hospital) at Maradi
  • Isskha Ngazoby Maternity Centre.


The summary from post-training monitoring is encouraging:

  • Firstly, the majority of the sites visited have adequate facilities for placing IUDS, and only one site seems not to have the physical space required to correctly apply their skills, but measures will be taken soon to correct this.
  • In addition, Professor Diouf reported that the placement of Intra Uterine Devices and Implant service provided by the trained group were very satisfactory. So much so, that the trained health professionals will become trainers themselves.

However Professor Diouf highlighted that building up nursing teams, a regular supply of intra uterine devices and other types of contraceptives would optimize the working conditions for the health professionals.

Thus, the first ground level activities for "Mona Lisa Africa" as well as the South/South co-operation (between Niger and Senegal) are very encouraging!
