JULY 2009
CNSR Training

To expand access to information and to services regarding reproductive health, the CNSR (National Center of Reproductive Health), with the support of HRA Pharma, has organized local training on the insertion and removal of IUDs during a workshop that took place between 6 and 17 July 2009. Five trainee midwives from the Niamey urban community participated in the workshop under the supervision of the two midwives Ms Abdoulaye Fatouma and Ms Sani Aissata Sékou.

The topics of the training included:

  • The intrauterine device (IUD) (history, types, mechanism of action, advantages, use, side effects...)
  • Prevention of infections
  • The various phases of counseling (support and advice in the choice of method of contraception)
  • Facts and fiction regarding IUDs
  • IUDs and infections of the lower genital tract
  • Presentation of all the material needed to insert and remove IUDs
  • Practical experience to insert and remove IUDs (film, use of a medical model and the opportunity for actual practical insertion in 20 cases in the field).

By the time this above named information has been made available, the 5 midwives were already in a position to insert and remove IUDs perfectly.
