FEEDBACK
For the period November 2007 to June 2008

The Ministry of Health (National Reproductive Health Services) that is responsible for the MonaLisa Niger programme is familiar with the recent changes. There was a change in management and our most important contact person in Family Planning, Dr Laouali Aissatou, left for further training for a year.

This made it necessary to wait for the introduction of the new team under the leadership of Dr Yaro Asma Gali, National Director of Mother and Child Healthcare. The action plan announced by the new DSR team is still in line with the essence of the MonaLisa Niger programme which is: developing a family planning policy, preparing the trainers on inserting and removing the IUD's, training the providers in inserting and removing the IUD's.

1/ Pole Training

Since the second batch of the 2 000 copper IUD's was sent in November 2007:

  • 15 Midwives attended 2 training sessions of 10 days that took place between November 2007 and February 2008, addressing the issues of inserting and removing the IUD's. The training consisted of a theoretical part of 5 days with practice on medical demonstration dolls and 5 days of practical experience with actual patients in medical centres in the city of Niamey.
  • 30 Healthcare providers of the Kollo district received training on the logistical management of contraceptives so as to be able to control supplies, warehousing and inventory management of various contraceptives including intra-uterine devices.

3/ Remarks on availability of stock of copper IUD's

According to the National Board of Mother and Child Healthcare, the remaining stock of IUD's in the MonaLisa programme would be sufficient to cover needs until the end of 2008. In 2009 though, we must allow for increased quantities of IUDs to meet the growing need of patients and for expanding the preparation/training plan of future trainers and providers.

4/ MonaLisa Niger Programme – Improving over time

The fact that the material required for the insertion and removal of IUD's needs to be free of charge (taken that in Niger people do not pay for family planning), still poses a problem. HRA Pharma stresses the fact enough that we are always looking for partners that can guarantee the free supply of elements such as sterile gloves, disinfectants, pliers, compresses...

A further need is to improve the preparation of educational elements adapted to the local environment so that we can optimize the training / education in connection with the insertion of IUDs. Till now we were unable to progress with this issue because of the many changes within the team the National Board of Health.
